1/30/2004: After the demonstration for women’s rights organized by Yanar Mohammed and others, the women who led the action and are active in nine district councils in Baghdad came back to the Agadir Hotel where we were staying to discuss their community organizing. The woman with whom I am standing founded, along with her husband, an organization called The Charity Society for Saving Iraqi Children. Since most, if not all, of the international NGOs have departed, the work she is doing takes on a greater urgency. They have established a center where children can learn computer skills, study and play. They are also trying to move Iraqi orphans into neighboring countries for safety.
